Music

Music has a special place at Highland Park Baptist, ranging from classical composers to Traditional Gospel, Jazz, and Contemporary artists.

Dr. Suzanne Pence directs our choir, and Dr. Brooks Whitmore is our church organist.

Along with traditional hymn signing, we often have special music performances.

Sanctuary Choir

The Adult Sanctuary Choir meets from 7:30-9:00 on Wednesday evenings. There is one worship service on Sunday morning at 10:55 am. The music performed at the worship service is chosen to support the overall theme of the service. We believe it is important to offer the singers and congregation a variety of musical styles while maintaining a high standard of performance. The Sanctuary Choir performs one major choral work with instruments each year, alternating between the Advent and Lenten seasons.

Choir Practice It is our goal for the members of the choir to feel that the rehearsal on Wednesday evening is a time of learning, fellowship, and beautiful music-making. It is our hope that the singers leave rehearsal refreshed, and that they have had a worship experience through the rehearsal. It is through intelligent, inspired performance that the congregation may then be moved to a deeper level of worship on Sunday morning.

The Organ

The organ at Highland Park originated at the turn of the 20th century as a theatre-type organ constructed by the Estey Organ Company. Wicks Organ Company rebuilt it for First Methodist Church of Bartlesville, Oklahoma. In 1956 it was purchased for $4600 through Mr. R. W. Gimpel of Oklahoma City. Dr. Alexander McCurdy dedicated it at Highland Park on April 15, 1956. At that time, the organ consisted of 9 ranks and 23 stops.

In 1980 Fort Organ Company of Dallas, Texas rebuilt the organ. It cost $44,675 which was donated through memorial gifts. Robert Lindley dedicated the organ on March 16, 1980. The rebuilt organ consists of 31 ranks, 25 stops and 1643 pipes.
