 Wednesday Weavings Schedule

Ministry Meeting Nights

On the first Wednesday of the month: January 6, February 3, March 3, April 7, May 5
All HPBC ministries, committees, and workgroups will meet after supper and our time of announcements and prayers. This is your opportunity to plan and pursue ministry goals.

January 13 - Clarence Jordan

On the eve of the 2010 Baptist Build for Habitat for Humanity we will explore the life and ministry of Baptist prophet and scholar Clarence Jordan. Jordan’s ministry in Georgia’s Koinonia Farms (a racially integrated community in the 1940’s) profoundly influenced Millard Fuller, founder of Habitat for Humanity. We will watch and discuss a DVD film of Jordan and Koinonia Farms.

January 20, 27 - Aging With Grace and Wisdom

Often the aging process is thought of only in terms of chronology. In thinking this way, individuals often miss some of the richest potential experiences of their lives. These two weeks will provide opportunity for discussion of the inevitability of life changes such as grief and loss, illness and other unwelcome changes but also joys and celebrations, the impact we can have on our aging, and an examination of how we can continue to contribute to our families and communities.

Come prepared to discover that you have at least four ages and, in Carl Jung's words, "that the afternoon of life has a significance of its' own." Presented by our own Nancy Lamb, a psychotherapist and gerontologist with Weavings Wellness Group.

February 10 - Francis of Assisi

Dr. Marcus McFaul will introduce our Lenten discussion and study of the Ian Cron book “Chasing Francis.” In fact, the life and ministry of Saint Francis of Assisi will be a year-long pursuit in the life of Highland Park Baptist Church. Francis gives us the opportunity to explore the Christian faith as one of spiritual pilgrimage.

Throughout 2010 the congregation will have films, lectures, a blessing of the animals, and prayer retreats to deepen our own personal and corporate journeys. On the 10th abroad sweep of both the book (Chasing Francis) and Francis himself will be given.

February 17 - Ash Wednesday Service

Lent Starts

February 24, March 10, 24 - Lenten Organ Series

On these Lenten Wednesdays, we will offer a time of contemplative musical reflection provided by area organists. We will begin in the Sanctuary promptly at 6:30 p.m. and conclude at 7:15 p.m.

March 17 - Spring Break - No Wednesday night activities

March 31 - Holy Week - Art in Holy Week

The Lenten Story in Art is a visually compelling way to see and understand the events of Holy Week in Christ' life. Rick MacArthur, pastor and art historian, will take us on a journey of viewing sacred works of art depicting the events from Palm Sunday through the Resurrection on Easter.

Viewing masterpieces such as the 15th century Turin Altarpiece by Hans Memling, the "Appearance of Christ to Mary Magdalen" by Titian, and Rembrandt's "Christ in the Garden,", we will ask the question how do these holy images enrich our faith and enliven our Lenten journey.

The Reverend Dr. Rick MacArthur is a pastor at Covenant Presbyterian Church and teaches art history at St. Edwards and Concordia University. He holds a graduate degree in art history from UT Austin as well as theology degrees from two seminaries. He is currently at work on a novel about the religious symbolism found in a stolen 14th century medieval manuscript. He and his wife, Jeannie, have two sons.

April 14, 21, 28 - Spiritual Type

Both individuals and congregations possess particular spiritual types--ways of receiving the presence of God. How do we learn to appreciate all of these types and what they bring to our worship and our congregational life? How can these different ways not separate us, but fit together into a spectrum of spiritual life that nourishes each one?

In this workshop we will learn the four spiritual types researched by Dr. Corinne Ware, evaluate our personal type, and explore the composition of the congregation at Highland Park Baptist Church. We will entertain the question--how can we provide enriched experiences for all of our members?

Anne Province will lead us in this three-part workshop. Anne is a spiritual director and teacher. A graduate of the Shalem Institute's Spiritual Guidance program, she is the former Associate Director of Seton Cove, an interfaith spirituality center, and serves as adjunct faculty at St. Edward's University. Anne has led workshops and retreats for congregations and denominational gatherings in many parts of Texas.

May 12, 19, 26 - Spiritual Gifts: One Spirit, Many Gifts

This three week curriculum will explore the basics of spiritual gifts—what are spiritual gifts? What are my gifts? How are my gifts used in the body of Christ? These sessions will be facilitated by Dr. McFaul and will include a Spiritual Gifts inventory for all participants.

The three sessions will be both presentation and small group dialogue. Why this emphasis? Simple. At Highland Park we value the empowering and equipping of laity for leadership. Our future as a church is found when we mobilize volunteers for ministries which fit their gifts.

Friends and members of Highland Park Baptist are welcome. Y'all come now!
